DO YOU EVER ASK YOURSELF . . .
Who am I?
You are part of the One Existence which men call God. You are divine in your origin and divine
in your innermost nature. Your body is mortal; your spirit which is your true Self, is immortal;
your soul, which is the self which thinks and feels and regards itself as 'I', may win its
immortality if it becomes the servant of spirit, and not otherwise.
Why am I here?
You are here in order to discover what you really are and to bring into activity all the powers
that lie sleeping within you. Since you are, in your true nature, a part of the divine life,
you have within yourself all the attributes of divinity:
infinite love ... infinite wisdom ... infinite power
Humanity is still very young and most of us have hardly begun the immense task of Self- Discovery.
But we are here to do this very thing, and we have all the time we need to do it.
Where am I going?
You are going in the direction you have chosen - either drifting through life, at the mercy of
events and of your own passing whims and moods or taking adult responsibility for the whole of
yourself, your character, your actions and your future. providing the perfect expression of
divinity in a human personality. You are choosing at every moment either to waste your
opportunities and deny your true Self or to accept your destiny and move consciously towards
the goal of Self-realisation.
The study of Theosophy will lead you to a fuller understanding of yourself and your true
purpose in life; it will help you to UNFOLD AND BECOME WHAT YOU ARE.
SOME FACTS ABOUT THEOSOPHY.
THEOSOPHY, the Wisdom of the Ages, says:
1. Theosophy is an exciting, non-stop field of exploration; to help acquaint you with
Universal Law, and live harmoniously within it, is the Work of Theosophy.
2. Theosophy is word of Greek origin (theos, god and sophia, wisdom) meaning
Divine Wisdom. The word 'Theosophy' has been in use for many centuries; the Divine Wisdom has
existed since the beginning of time.
3. Theosophy has been defined many times. But Divine Wisdom cannot be enclosed within words.
All statements about Theosophy are partial and tentative. Divine Wisdom, which is Truth, must
be discovered in experience by each one for themselves.
4. Theosophy stands for knowledge of Truth. The theosophical tradition affirms that by
exploring the deeps of our own nature we can come to the experience of Truth. This experience
is Theosophy, the knowledge of ultimate Reality.
5. Theosophy stands also for the principles of existence. The theosophical tradition
affirms
that all life is one life;
that law pervades the universe;
that an evolutionary process is everywhere at work.
In the sphere of human life, these principles are expressed as the brotherhood of all mankind;
the unfolding of possibilities through reincarnation under the law of karma;
and human perfectability and self-transcendence.
6. Theosophy is the light that shines through the many-coloured lamps of religion. It is
the thread of truth in scriptures, creeds, symbols, myths and rituals. The Divine Wisdom is
one; the paths towards it are many.
Paragraphs 1 to 3 indicate the nature of Theosophy and its purpose ... to help each one of us to discover the Divine Wisdom within ourselves.
Paragraphs 5 and 6, in particular, encapsulate the Principal Teachings of Theosophy. Further elaboration of these paragraphs will provide a sound background to, and framework for, the Task of Unfoldment.
As members of The Theosophical Society in England, our underlying purpose is the Unfoldment of the Divine Wisdom within.
